Reaching our potential as easy as enlisting the help of a life coach.

Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development claimed that children reach their full potential with extra assistance.  suggesting the difference between being and reaching your potential is assistance.   Children generally receive this from their teachers, parents or siblings as they learn through experience and stimulation.  As we become adults we no longer have this support and settle into the development scope we have made for ourselves.

Basically Vygotsky claimed that we all under achieve on our own when unassisted however when a new perspective is added we challenge ourselves to achieve more.

Perception and the importance of understanding how it effects missunderstandings.

Critical psychology teaches us that our social world and our perception of the world is based on our experiences and our experiences are based on our attitudes, culture and up bringing, which in turn are effected by culture and are historically contextual.   It is important to understand that our perceptions do not in anyway reflect others perceptions, they are our own creations.  It is further necessary to understand that no one directly verbalises their inner thoughts, fears and attitudes. These are entirely contextual and are based on the available information and what is the persons desired outcome of the communication.

When this is realised it is easy to understand how communication break downs can occur.

When you are requesting change first consider:

  • If a person has prior experience of a negative situation regarding the topic under discussion it is most likely that they will form some prior assumptions before responding.
  • When communicating  anything to another person make sure that you break down any misunderstandings due to preconceived ideas.

How many times have you said or heard said “oh that is what you meant, I thought you were telling me ……

This occurs due to a persons brain fore-thinking what the other person is about to say this then forms the bases of what is said rather than what is actually said.

  • This leads to our next recommendation for good communication which leads to true perception of the situation, which is actually listen when another person is speaking.
  • another good idea is to ask for clarification or reiterate what is said.

So today we have looked at perceptions and how they can be altered but also how simple steps can allow much truer perceptions to be created and allowing for much less misunderstandings in our communications.

Law of Attraction.

The law of attraction is a popular metaphysical thought on how things happen and are attained.  A major resource on understanding the law of attraction is the movie “The Secret”.  Which tells the story of a lady who discovers the power of the ancient idea of the law of attraction.  It has a commentary of professionals confirming and explaining how it work.

The basic premise of the Law of Attraction is that whatever you focus on or ask for that is what you will receive.   So if you tell yourself you are no good at Maths, that is what you will receive the lack of ability to do Maths.

Ways to harness the law of Attraction.

  • Cultivating a positive self talk will allow you to focus on what you want rather than what you believe yourself to be.
  • Write down what you want your life to be like in 3, 5 and 10 years time.
  • Try to eliminate the self limiting words a person of low self esteem uses such as: can’t, only, just, when referring to yourself.
  • Wish for what you want.
  • Don’t think about anything you don’t want.
  • Worry less about what you don’t have and focus more on what you want.

Why is life coaching so expensive?

The short answer is ” it’s not” when you consider what is involved.

If something costs next to nothing there is a tendency to value it less.  A major requirement for Life coaching is commitment to the relationship and effort put into the change.  The age old saying “you get out what you put in to it” rings particularly true for life coaching.  For many Life coaching is considered out of reach because of the cost however for those who have taken the plunge the cost of not having it, becomes much greater.

If you commit to life coaching fully it can, based on the focus you choose, generate a healthier happier life which will pay out in improved health, increased creativity, greater flexibility of thought, improved self esteem, create space and time in your life.

eg. If you focus on relationship coaching and learn to improve one relationship it will inevitably show you the way forward for all relationship.  i.e. co-workers, bosses, employees.  This slight change to your thought patterns or way you present or think of yourself, could eventually improve your working life and perhaps pave the way to promotions.

Don’t think of coaching as just a 1 hour session a week.   It also involves mental and physical exercises during the week which will pave the way to change.  A coach puts great thought and consideration into your individual needs, sources resources and plans out exercises to assist you.   Life coaches will generally coach only a few people at a time.
